EFFECT OF METHOD OF PLANTING AND TIME OF WEEDING ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF ROW SOWN GINGELLY (Sesamum indicum L.) VAR:Malee UNDERCROPPED WITH COCONUT (Cocos nucifera L.)

By Admin | May 31, 2009

Gingelly (Sesamum indicum L.) a traditional crop in chena cultivation, is one of the important oil crop in the dry zone of Sri Lanka. Method of establishment and weeding are identified as critical yield attributed agronomic practices in gingely cultivation. Two separate experiments were carried out at the Farm of School of Agriculture, Kundasale to find out the effect of different method of establishment and time of weeding on growth and yield of gingelly when cultivated as underrcrop with 3 years old coconut plantation. Gingelly variety malee was broadcasted and row sown under unweeded condition in the experiment I and weeding at 2nd, 5th, 8th weeks after row sowing and control treatment were carried out in the experiment II. The results of the experiment I showed that the row sowing was good method of establishment than broadcasting. Mean yield of broadcasted and row sown were 530.5 and 680 kg/ha respectively. Time of weeding in the experiment II showed that weeding at 5th weeks after establishment was effective, allowed to greater photo assimilate partition to uplift the yield level (712 kg/ha) by maintaining LAI value of 3.22. LAI values of 8th weeks after weeding and control treatments attained similar LAI value of 2.26. The second highest yield of 694.8 kg/ha was achieved in weeded plants at 2nd week after establishment. Weeding at 8th weeks after establishment and control treatment gave yield levels of 683.5 and 682.3 kg/ha respectively. It can be concluded from the study row sowing and weeding at 5th weeks after sowing were the best method of production practices for gingelly variety malee cultivation as undercrop with coconut. The critical period for weed crop competition was about 5th weeks after establishment.
